As a country steeped in so much history, it's no surprise that England is full of historical landmarks that are a delight for sight-seeing. Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, the Tower of London (with the Crown Jewels within), Trafalgar Square with Nelson's Column and St. Paul's Cathedral are just some of London's highlights, but there's also more around the country, such as Warwick Castle, Oxford's Colleges and Libraries, Stonehenge, and the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol. |

It's not just architectural sights though; England also amazes with the rolling terrain of the Yorkshire Moors, the mountains and lakes of the Lake District, the beauty and size of the Peak District, the Angel of the North and the glorious sandy beaches of Devon and Cornwall, a match for the golden sands of many beaches in other parts of the world, and modern sights in city centres, such as Piccadilly Circus and the London Eye. |

Once a source of mockery for its European neighbours eating out (and pride in food) in England has undergone something of a radical transformation in recent times. Not only has fine dining grown and become an expected part of all major cities, with a real boom in restaurant choice, but quality food and establishments now exist in towns all over in England. Traditional English food like roast beef, Lancashire hotpot, bangers and mash, the full English breakfast and, of course, fish & chips have not only survived, but flourished in this new culinary climate.

Fish & chips is an English tradition, and no visit to a coastal resort is complete without tucking into some on the beach. England is now also home to every type of world cuisine, from Italian and tapas to grill houses and Caribbean. In particular, with the large influx of immigrants, Chinese and Indian cuisines are part of everyday English culture, with Indian food in particular adapting to English tastes to create a new 'western' Indian cuisine, with staples like Balti and Tikka Masala. |

Whatever your preference, England can entertain you. The nightlife of London is legendary; theatres, shows, nightclubs, bars, pubs and restaurants galore. It is also home to one of the biggest and most varied music scenes in the world, with scores of events every night. Music is not just limited to London though, English popular music acts have been cited as some of the most influential and best-selling of all time and came from all over the country, and music forms a popular and readily available entertainment in all major towns and cities, including England's famous nightclubs, such as Gatecrasher in Sheffield and the Ministry of Sound in London.
England is also the spiritual home of the pub, perhaps the quintessential English place to relax and spend an afternoon or evening and a meeting place for the local community. Pubs vary from quaint historic buildings, to lively busy places more resembling a bar, and are found in every city, town and village of England. |

Shopping really is a delight in England, and can take up a holiday there in itself. London is home to many famous shopping locations, from the tailoring tradition of Carnaby Street, the ubiquitous Oxford Street, the huge markets of Camden and the home of many fashionable shops Covent Garden to individual landmarks such as Harrods and Hamleys and the Westfield shopping centre (the largest centre in Europe). Around England you will find city centres full of big high street and designer names, where you truly can shop for anything you're after, as well as many large out of town shopping centres and retail outlet parks which are massively popular with tourists, offering famous designer outlets with stock at bargain prices. |

Family entertainment is in plentiful supply in England. There are the famous and picturesque English seaside resorts offering traditional family entertainment, and large cities full of shops, sights and activities to please everyone. England is also home to some very large theme parks including Alton Towers and Thorpe Park offering superb family days out with a healthy dose of adrenalin.
Some stunning stately homes such as Blenheim Palace and Windsor Castle in which to marvel at the splendour of the past, as well as many place to camp and hike for the more adventurous families out there. England is also proud to be home to many fine museums across the land, including some which are a full day out for the family, such as the Science Museum, the Natural History Museum in London as well as many galleries such as the National Gallery and the Tate Modern. Not only are these excellent family days out, many are free to enter! |
